Manatees Tour

Bocas del Toro has a lot of atractions, but if you want to see some of the most exotic animals on earth then you should go on this tour.

The San San Pond Sack, a protected area that retains a representative sample of the Panamanian Caribbean soil with edaphic associations (Holdridge, 1972), some of them with characteristics of uniqueness (ecosystems with unique characteristics that occur in one place in the country only) and different species of animals, some of them are in danger of extinction.

 

This protected area is located northwest of the town of Changuinola, Bocas del Toro. The protected area has an extension of 17,000 square Km. There are near of 38Km of coast of which 22Km are beaches in the northern part of the protected are. The average temperature is 27,6 ÂșC and the presipitation is 2,800mm, distributed in 12 months of the year . 

There ar not a defined community inside of the limits of HSSPS, nevertheless the local residents are engaged in agriculture and the subsistence fishing

 The manatee tour begins with a journey of the San San River, where people can observe birds, iguanas, sloths and others. After 40 minutes we arrive at the platform where you must wait for two hours to observe the manatees, you have to be very patient and silent. Then you will go to the beach site where the facilities are located and the marine turtles project is carried out. Finally a through the mouth and back.

 

 Time  Description
 8:30 a.m.
  • In San San Puente, welcome speech about de safety standards and the behavior in the tour, and description of the characteristics of the wetland in the visitor center.
9:00 a.m
  • Boat trip to the manatee observation platform. The boat is going to be driven at an average speed; therefore, the guide can explain the surroundings and the passengers can appreciate the scenic beauty.
9:40 a.m.
  • Arrival to the platform in silence. Reinforcement of information about manatees with illustrated pictures of their food, reproduction, behavior and their habitat. 
  • Coffee Break.
11:40 a.m.
  • Transfer by boat (average speed) from the La Lata platform.
12:00 m.d.
  • Departure by boat back to the San San bridge.
